I’m currently reading The Culture of Fear by Barry Glassner and I just read his discussion on the apparent rise in Rohypnol use in date rape cases. Barry calmly explains that all the while the big networks and government are publicizing this apparent rise in Rohypnol use, there is very little data to back up their claims. Quite the contrary actually:
“From mid-1996 through mid-1998, while the roofie scare was in full bloom, Hoffman-La Roche, the Swiss company that makes the drug, provided test kits to rape-crisis centers, hospital emergency rooms, and police throughout the country. Rape victims who believed they had been drugged were asked to provide a sample of their urine which was sent to an independent laboratory for analysis. Of the 1,033 tests returned, only six contained Rohypnol. About one-third of the samples contained no drugs; the remainder contained a variety of legal and illegal substances, alcohol being far and away the most common.”

The Culture of Fear by Barry Glassner, 1999. Karla Haworth, “The growing popularity of a new drug alarms health educators,”, Chronicle of Higher Education, 10 July 1998, pp. A31-32; additional information provided by Hoffman-La Roche. (Testing was done by El Sohly Laboratories, a forensic toxicology facility certified by the National Institute of Drug Abuse.)
Rohypnol is more commonly used, though many of us are completely unaware, as a sleeping aid and by recreational drug users to ’simulate the effect of alcohol consumption’ without the alcohol. Instead, the media portrays the drug as the ‘date-rape drug’, ‘a loaded gun’ or ‘a weapon used to faciliate sexual assault’.
Though it is true Rohypnol can be used for such uses, let’s not be overly alarmed over it’s apparent rise as a date-rape drug, but instead educate the masses about it’s prescribed/intended uses and side effects, all the while teaching the youngsters of our generation to consume drugs, illicit or not, with reason, caution and safety.
A dose of truth would go a long way in this respect…

bad design
Ok, so in the previous discussion, I gave a pretty general overview of how to define your website’s goals and audiences in order to target the content you provide your visitors with. Providing your visitors with relevant content is without a doubt the most important building block towards a successful website, but if you’d like to increase your success rate, then tweaking the manner in which you present the content can go a long way!
I’ve already eluded to targeting your content in such a manner that will please your visitors, and there are a few ways you can go about doing this:
- Know what your users want, and give it to them!
- Know what you are writing about, and if you don’t, find someone else to do it.
- Write appropriately
- Engage your visitors
- Give them a reason to come back
I highly recommend tackling a few of the items above, they’ll definitely help you in the long run. On top of these content based changes, ensuring the website is easy to navigate, intuitive and pleasing to the eye will go a long way when trying to convert first time visitors into repeat visitors!

In my first SEO based discussion topic I’ll be covering something that’s rather simple in principle, but can easily be overlooked. Many times when I visit a website, I get lost, and no, it isn’t because I get easily confused (that’s another issue altogether!). These confusing websites make it very hard to easily navigate the site, and that can usually be attributed to a lack of direction in the written content, among other things. In the following paragraphs I’ll cover off a few areas that can easily be optimized in order to increase your visitor’s return rate, satisfaction and readership. Let’s get going then!

So, you’ve got a website and you’re itching to skip right to the last step: Profit. Am I right?
If so, you’ll likely find this series of posts informative. I’ll try and walk you through some simple, and free, steps that you can apply to just about any website you have. What drives my need to help you? I can’t help but get mad at these so called SEO Gurus that claim to work some kind of shamanism on your website for some ridiculous cost. So basically, I’m here to undercut them….severely.
I’ll be posting regularly on topics that I have, in my vast experience as a web designer, found to be of most benefit to new websites that are looking to get a foothold in what is the world wide web. The tips and approaches I will be discussing are designed to be effective, easy to implement and cost you nothing but a bit of your time. Simply spend some time reading and start incorporating a few of the changes, you’ll notice the difference in a matter of weeks.
Stay tuned for my very first topic, I’ll be discussing how to define your target audience. It’s something thats trivial, but without it, you simply lose all direction in your website and you would be surprised how many websites fail due to overlooking this very important stepping stone to success.
